MEET THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD 2007

JACK GILLMAR

Recently retired from teaching ancient history, psychology, world cultures, and economics at La Pietra School. He is Chairman of the Parker School Trust, which supports that school and Waimea Community Education on the Big Island. Jack also serves as President of Friendship Garden Foundation, restorer of a 10-acre garden of trails and views of Kane'ohe Bay and the Ko'olaus.

 

ANNIE MORIYASU

Annie Moriyasu is currently the Acquisitions and Distribution Manager for Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC). In this capacity she acquires television programs for national PBS broadcast. Born in Hawai'i, she has a background in the fine arts and cinema from San Francisco State University.

Annie is a documentary producer, film festival programmer, and artist deeply committed to media as a tool for civic engagement.

 

NANCY BANNICK

1927-2008

Freelance writer and long time volunteer historic preservationist. 2006 Philanthropist of the Year. She was Hawai'i Consultant for Sunset Magazine and served for 20 years as its Hawai'i Editor and wrote its guidebooks on the Hawaiian Islands. She was Chair of the Mayor's Historic Buildings Task Force which published Old Honolulu: A Guide to Oahu's Historic Buildings. Nancy was an original Trustee of Historic Hawai'i Foundation and its first preservation award winner. She was on the Board of the Honolulu Symphony and Hawaii Public Radio, was Vice President of Friends of the Natatorium and Chamber Music Hawai'i, and a member of the Governor's Diamond Head Citizens Advisory Committee and the Save Diamond Head association.

 

CICELY CROCKER GEORGE, member emeritus and advisory board member

President of Scenic Hawaii and a member of the Nimitz Beautification Committee and the Mayor's Beautification Advisory Committee. She is a broker and sales manager at Schuler Homes. Cicely is the daughter of the late Betty Crocker, a three-term President of The Outdoor Circle and founder and President of Scenic Hawai'i. Betty was also a Director of KPPS for many years.

 

BOARD MEMBER EMERITUS: WESLEY KINDER

One of the original founders of KPPS, Wes served on the board from 1986-2004. A retired architect whose designs include the Blaisdell Concert Hall, Wes was for many years Chair of the Urban Design Committee of the AIA and continues to bring his love of aesthetics and preservation to KPPS.

 

HEIDI LEIANUENUE BORNHORST

Heidi is a sustainable landscape design and maintenance consultant and a Certified Arborist with expertise in landscape maintenance, horticulture, native Hawaiian plants, xeriscaping, and historic trees. She is Director Emeritus of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. Heidi's column "Hawai'i Gardens" runs Fridays in The Honolulu Advertiser, and she has a weekly television feature, "The Morning Garden," on KITV-4. She is the author of the book Growing Native Hawaiian Plants.

 

SIDNEY SNYDER

President of Ossipoff, Snyder & Rowland Architects, and Principal Architect and Designer on select projects such as the renovation of the Waikiki Aquarium. He is Vice Chair of the Governor's Diamond Head Citizens Advisory Committee and an officer of the Save Diamond Head Association. Sid is a founding Trustee of Historic Hawai'i Foundation. He has served as President of the Hawai'i Chapter, American Institute of Architects, and on many design and planning committees for the City, State, and University of Hawai'i.

DONNA CHING

Donna works as the director of development for Leo A. Daly's Honolulu office. For 14 years, she was a non-profit and community-based initiatives management specialist, focused on facilitating community capacity building.  Her work includes projects for the Hawaii State Department of Health, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Kamehameha Schools, US Department of Education, Hawaii Children’s Trust Fund, Oahu Head Start and Office of Hawaiian Affairs.  She has served as a member of the Manoa Neighborhood Board and on the Advisory Board for Healthy Start.  She is also a Board Member of the Honolulu Community Action Program and the Friends of the Natatorium, and Fellow of Yale’s Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy.

     ALETHEA REBMAN

 

Board president. Lawyer, runner, and bodyboarder, Alethea is a founding member and on the board of Save Diamond Head Waters, which has been fighting the increasing surf school activity at Sans Souci Beach, the waters off the Park's shore and in the Park, is an active volunteer attorney with VLSH, and is on the board of Citizen Voice, an open-government group.

 

JACQUE LAW

Continuing Membership Chair, a Director of Scenic Hawai'i and also its Membership Chair. She worked hard on the successful Save Irwin Park campaign. Jacque is the widow of Cmdr. Robert Law, U.S. Navy Reserve, who was stationed in Hawai'i from 1958 to 1964 when he retired. The Laws moved back to Hawai'i in 1970. Jacque is also a delegate to Panhellenic of Hawai'i.
